Food Is Medicine Cooking Class: Boost Your Immune System for the Winter

As the weather cools and the cold season approaches, this fun and empowering hands-on experience will help you learn how to strengthen your body from the inside out with delicious, healing soups and broths. Together, we’ll explore how food truly is medicine, a source of nourishment, restoration, and community

In partnership with the Union Cultural Center and led by Leika Suzumura, Community Nourishian, this session will center on foods and practices that support your immune system and overall wellness

In this class, we will

  • Learn about foods with natural medicinal and immune-boosting properties
  • Discover flavorful broths and soups that work in harmony with your body
  • Explore proteins and plant-based options to personalize your dishes
  • Cook and share a warm, nutrient-rich meal together

No cooking experience required.

LEIKA SUZUMURA

Leika Suzumura is a community nutrition educator (Nourishian) dedicated to uplifting health and well-being in her community. Leika earned her BS in Nutrition from Bastyr University in 2006 and recently completed her Master of Public Health at the University of Washington, specializing in Community Oriented Public Health Practice. She has been working in the Rainier Valley of South Seattle for 15 years, providing experiential and community driven opportunities for people to learn and share food traditions, connect community, and honor the land our food comes from. Her approach to nutrition is deeply rooted in cultural tradition, bringing people together around shared meals as a way to nourish ourselves and celebrate life.
